XRP Ledger: How Does It Work and What Sets It Apart?

Introduction to the XRP Ledger

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is a decentralized, permissionless, and open-source blockchain that has gained significant attention for its efficiency, low transaction costs, and commitment to environmental sustainability. In this article, we will delve into the basics of the XRP Ledger, explore how it operates, and highlight the environmentally friendly features that set it apart from other blockchain technologies, including proof of work blockchains.

What is the XRP Ledger?

The XRP Ledger, also known as XRPL, was created in 2012 by three Bitcoin developers (David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb, and Arthur Britto) who aimed to create a blockchain that offered more scalability, efficiency, and sustainability than Bitcoin. The ledger’s main goal was to facilitate fast and low-cost transactions, making it suitable for various applications, including payments, tokenization, and decentralized finance (DeFi).

Ripple and the XRP Ledger

Many people think the XRP Ledger is centrally controlled by the Ripple company. This is not the case. As mentioned, the XRPL is permissionless and open source. There are more than 150 validators that help the ledger reach consensus. As noted on the XRPL website: “Any changes that would impact transaction processing or consensus need to be approved by at least 80% of the network.” Ripple currently runs 6 of these network nodes.

The founders transferred 80 billion XRP to the company, 55 billion of which was held in escrow.

In 2020, the nonprofit XRPL Foundation was set up to accelerate the development and adoption of the XRP Ledger.

How the XRP Ledger Works

The XRP Ledger operates through a decentralized network of independent nodes, each responsible for processing transactions and maintaining the shared state of the ledger. To participate in the network, individuals, corporations, universities, or exchanges can run nodes and choose from three roles: stock node, validator node, or hub node.

Validator nodes play a critical role in reaching consensus on the sequence of transactions, ensuring that they are executed consistently across the ledger. The process of confirming transactions is community-led, as proposed changes to the protocol undergo a thorough amendment process, with 80% approval from validator nodes being a key requirement for ratification.

Is the XRP Ledger Environmentally Friendly?

One of the XRP Ledger’s standout features is its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. While many other blockchains rely on energy-intensive consensus mechanisms, the XRP Ledger uses a highly efficient agreement method that consumes minimal energy, incurs low costs, and completes transactions in seconds.

In 2020, the XRP Ledger achieved a significant milestone by becoming the world’s first major carbon net-zero blockchain. The XRPL Foundation actively purchases renewable energy to offset the small energy footprint of the ledger, demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental conservation.

Advanced Features of the XRP Ledger

The XRP Ledger offers advanced features that enhance its functionality, making it an attractive choice for developers in the payment application domain. These features include:

  1. Multi-Signing (Multi-Sig): A security feature that requires multiple signatures to authorize a transaction, providing an additional layer of protection and flexibility in managing accounts.
  2. Escrow: Allows the storage of XRP for a specific period, with funds being released on a designated date or when certain conditions are met. It ensures secure transactions during evaluation periods or cross-chain swaps.
  3. Payment Channels: Facilitates rapid and efficient XRP payments, particularly for use cases such as streaming payments or pre-funding accounts.

XRP Ledger for CBDCs

Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) have emerged as an important use case for the XRPL. In 2023, Ripple launched a new CBDC platform based on XRP Ledger technology. Ripple’s CBDC platform is essentially a private version of the XRP Ledger that gives governments full control over digital currency minting, redemption, and destruction.

At present three countries are testing CBDCs on the XRPL, these include Montenegro, Bhutan, and the Republic of Palau (which recently issued a US dollar-backed stablecoin).
