What is a hardware wallet?

Before getting into the Ellipal Titan review, we’ll briefly explain what a hardware wallet is and how they work.

Hardware wallets work by storing your private keys on a device that is not connected to the internet. This ensures that they are less vulnerable to hacks and other types of malware.

What are crypto keys?

Owning crypto gives you access to a set of keys. These cryptographic keys allow you to transact with that cryptocurrency. The cryptocurrency itself is stored on a blockchain (a cryptographically secure immutable ledger).

Cryptocurrency involves both public and private keys. The public key is loosely comparable to your email address. You can share this publicly, and others can use it to send you cryptocurrency.

The private key must never be shared with anyone else. If someone gets access to your private key, they may be able to access your crypto too! It is the private key that is stored and kept secure on the hardware wallet.

Seed Phrase

When setting up a cryptocurrency wallet, a string of words (usually 24 or 12 words) is generated. This is known as a “seed phrase” and is the only backup you’ll have if your hardware wallet lets lost, stolen, or breaks.

It is vital that you keep your seed phrase offline and in a secure place. Never store it digitally, or take a picture of your seed phrase. If someone gets access to your seed phrase, they’ll be able to access your cryptocurrency!

What to expect when unboxing the Ellipal Titan

As with any other hardware wallet, it’s essential to check the integrity of your Ellipal Titan packaging and the device itself. If you suspect that the device has been tampered with in any way, contact the manufacturer and send it right back. The risk here is that your device may have been victim to supply-chain tampering, where scammers could infect the device with malware to steal your crypto.

Inside the box, you’ll get:

  • Ellipal Titan cold wallet
  • Security adapter plus
  • Memory card
  • Instruction manual
  • Charging cord
  • Cards to write down your mnemonic or seed phrase

Security Adaptor Plus

As you can see, the Ellipal Titan looks quite similar to a mobile phone. It has a sleek attractive design and a large bright screen. The hardware wallet has a built in camera for scanning QR codes. For those of us who are into aesthetics, the Titan comes in both grey and gold models.

Ellipal Titan Review: Security Features

Security is the main consideration when buying a hardware wallet, and the Ellipal Titan is one of the most secure hardware wallets on the market. Let’s take a look at the security features that set it apart from other hardware wallets.

Air-Gapped: 100% Connection Free

While other hardware wallets rely on USB or Bluetooth connections to online devices to work, Ellipal remains 100% connection-free at all times. This is known as “air-gapped” and makes the Ellipal Titan the only “cold storage” hardware wallet in the true meaning of that phrase.

Instead of connecting to an online device, Ellipal uses QR code technology to transfer the wallet information. This feature is currently unique to the Ellipal Titan and provides an extra level of security against malicious attacks.

Anti-Tamper and Anti-Disassembly

For extra security, the Elipal features a fully sealed metal frame. In the event that the Ellipal Titan is forcibly opened the system is programmed to destroy itself, thereby protecting users’ data. This also protects the Ellipal Titan from “supply-chain tampering”. If anyone has attempted to tamper with the device, it would be obvious to the user when they open it for the first time.

Coins the Ellipal Titan supports

The Ellipal Titan supports a wide variety of coins. At the time of writing this Ellipal Titan review, it supports 41 blockchains and over 10,000 cryptocurrencies! Coins are supported by the native software on the device, so there is no need for users to install additional third-party apps (as is the case with some other hardware wallets).

Ellipal Mobile App

It’s possible to link the Ellipal hardware wallet to the Ellipal Mobile App. The mobile app provides additional functionality to the cold wallet. For example, users can trade their crypto thanks to a built-in coin conversion and Binance DEX.
