We previously reported on the launch of the digital euro project and the Digital Euro Association’s partnership with Ripple.
On 25 February 2022, the Eurogroup (an informal group of the finance ministers of the countries using the Euro) made an announcement on the digital euro saying that it supported the project but that political dimensions of a digital euro and the trade-offs in full respect of the institutional roles and mandates of all actors involved would need to be examined.
The Eurogroup set out its plan to contribute the digital euro, saying that by April 2022, it will have considered privacy, money laundering, illicit financing, and tax evasion issues, and by June 2022 it will have considered the impact of the digital euro on the financial system and the use of cash, while by the end of 2022 it will discuss “. . .the broader ecosystem around the digital euro and the role and business models of the various public and private actors in this ecosystem . . .”
