Tezos Unveils Game-Changing Mumbai Upgrade, Paving the Way for One Million Transactions per Second

Tezos has announced the activation of its thirteenth core protocol upgrade, called Mumbai. The upgrade introduces Smart Rollups, a Layer 2 scaling solution that is built directly into the protocol and will allow the network to reach over one million transactions per second.

How will the Mumbai Update and Smart Rollups improve Tezos?

With the Mumbai Upgrade’s Smart Rollups, decentralized applications (dApps) can leverage their own dedicated hardware resources to process a high volume of transactions, while the integrity and security of the Smart Rollup is ensured by the Tezos main chain, or Layer 1.

Importantly, this update will allow Tezos to scale to over one million transactions per second without compromising decentralization.

According to Tezo’s Press Release, Smart Rollups also come with advanced features such as fully decentralized and open interactive fraud proofs, a WebAssembly (WASM) execution environment for flexible development and deployment of various decentralized applications, and new data availability solutions.

The Mumbai Upgrade also brings improvements to Tezos’ Layer 1, including a reduction in block time from 30 to 15 seconds, made possible by Pipelined validation. Additionally, previously existing features like Tickets become more flexible by allowing direct transfers between users.

As with all Tezos upgrades, Mumbai has been validated and approved by the community through the Tezos blockchain’s on-chain governance process.
